I have been in the steel business for over 50 years, first 20 years in China and the last 30 years in the USA. My personal experience gave me a rare opportunity to see the rise of the Chinese Steel Industry from 20 some million tons in 1980 to 586 During the same period of time the US steel production has dropped by 50%. My job in the USA was primary selling western mills and other machineries to China and other Asian Countries.
China has imported various equipment. The Chinese engineers have also demonstrated their talents by absorbing and improving the advanced technologies. Today China has become increasingly independent in supplying a wide variety of both steel making equipment and mill equipment. It also has become a major source of OEM to foreign mill suppliers.
TTIC was originally a company dedicated to selling western technologies and equipment, but we’ve reversed our role to face the challenges of bringing the products, services and technologies of China, to the rest of the world. As the largest steel producer in the world, China is also the major consumer of steel. There’s an old Chinese saying, “Without the skin there will be no fur.” The downsizing and production loss of the western steel industry will over time, diminish the advantages of the western mill suppliers and designers. My experience tells me the direction of the wind has changed.
